Fun Fit Bears

The 2017 Bear-a-Thon “Bear” Bones Every Parent Should Know

  • This is our only major fundraiser of the year.  The purpose is to build school and community spirit, promote physical fitness, encourage goal setting, and raise funds for the school in a fun way to support our teachers and staff, helping Broadmoor students excel.

  • Students have the opportunity to walk/run laps to accrue mileage for a 10k, ½ marathon, a full marathon, or even multiple marathons over the course of the first 8.5 weeks of school during M/W/F lunch recesses and Thursday mornings at 7:45 a.m.  Last year’s students covered just shy of 6900 miles during the Bear-a-Thon and 126 students ran full marathons!

  • Families are encouraged to work out the math with their students, to figure out how much and how often they need to participate in order to meet their goals.

  • Since the kids will be watching the eclipse on Monday, August 21st, during lunch, our first running day will be Tuesday, August 22nd.

  • Students are rewarded for physical achievement.  Every mile walked/run earns a toe token.  There are additional tokens for special achievements such as the 10k, ½ marathon, marathon, and additional marathons.  Tokens are handed out every first day of the week.  All children get an event-day T-shirt, displaying our major sponsors.

  • Students who complete a full marathon will receive a medal on Event Day, Wednesday, October 18th.  This is a special ceremony recognizing the kids’ hard work.  Parents are welcome to come.  The ceremony begins at 2p.m.

  • Wednesday, September 20th will be our Fun Fit Feast – an all-family pasta dinner to get to know our school community better and celebrate what the kids are doing, mid-way through the program.

  • Students seek pledges from grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and close friends.  Pledges can be a flat pledge or per mile ran.  We will keep track of each student’s mileage.  NO door-to-door solicitation.

  • We also seek sponsorship for the event from businesses in our school community and local community.  If your business is interested in being a sponsor, please contact Erin Eilmes at erintilney@hotmail.com.

  • Students are rewarded with fundraising incentives for raising certain levels of financial support.

  • All money will be collected by Tues, Oct. 17th.  (The kids’ final day of running is the 16th, with just a final ¼ mile ran on event day, Wed., Oct. 18th, during the Event Day celebration.)

  • Pledge packets, to collect the actual checks, will be distributed in early October.

  • Each week, Mr. Reed will focus on a healthy tip.  Ask your kids to share what they are learning.

  • Encourage your child to hydrate and fuel well, as well as wear appropriate athletic footwear.

  • Volunteers are needed to help monitor the laps, raise funds, help with the Fun Fit Feast, and other behind-the-scenes opportunities.  Email Erin Eilmes at erintilney@hotmail.com to get plugged in!
