General Information

Ms. Lowe - Art

It is BEST to reach me via e-mail, and you can do this by clicking the small envelope next to my name below .

I can be reached via phone before and after school, and sometimes at lunch. My extension is #18. If you get into the answering system please leave me a message. I travel between two schools and rotate every 2 weeks (typically). It can be difficult to check voice mails frequently. Please be patient and I will do my best to call you back as soon as possible!

Classroom Management

High Five Class Assessment: At the end of each art class, students self rate the class on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the highest. The class that receives the highest points at semester earns a special prize.

The Penalty Box: This is for individual students who are disrupting the learning of the group. They receive one warning. After the first warning, they get their name on the board. If they disrupt learning in the same day, they lose lunch recess time and call home. If they disrupt learning 3 times in a week, they will lose recess and call home (2nd-6th grade only). Kindergarten and first is a day to day basis (3 strikes per class) unless the behavior is continually problematic, then I will call home.

Safe environment policy: I have zero tolerance for certain behaviors: violence or injuring another student, foul language, defiance (arguing with the teacher), name calling, and destroying school property or the work of others. These actions will result in a call home and sometimes an immediate visit with the principal. This is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all children to learn and create!

Artwork and Art Shows--Look for art to come home at the end of the year!

EVERY Student at this school attends Art Class on average 5 days per month. In that time we create anywhere between 4-8 projects (depending on the size and complexity of the pieces). I keep most student work until Art Show season has ended (typically near the end of the year) but be sure that you should receive all of your child's artwork before Summer break!

You are always welcome to stop by the art room to see what your child is learning and creating in the art room. I will have Art Attack updates in the newsletter as well as photos of kids at work. Please check the newsletter and school calendar for Art Show announcements!

Grades and Report Cards

My grading philosophy is based on the participation and effort of the individual child. Art is a personal journey and we all perform at different levels and abilities. Quality craftsmanship and best effort will earn high grades. I grade the student at his or her level. I will be keeping a portfolio of student work to show an overall progress of learning (and of course all work will come home to you at the end of the school year!).

On the report cards, I will give out mostly 3s which means the students are meeting my expectations. I will occasionally give a few 4s to those who are really excelling and 1s and 2s to those who need to improve. I feel that if everyone gets a 4 on a report card, then my expectations are to low. Meeting the expectations of the class and earning a 3 means students are working hard and doing well but have room to improve and grow!
